The Benefit Mascara Showdown

As a serial false lashes wearer, mascara has never been top of my makeup priority list. Since finding the Maybelline Lash Sensational and falling in love, I have't really felt the need to look for anything else. It gives my short, sparse lashes the extra volume and length they need without the need for falsies. A breakthrough in itself! Step in They're Real and Roller Lash, two of the countries favourite mascaras, both from Benefit. After receiving both of these as a gift from my grandma, I've decided to put them both to the test on my natural lashes and share the results.

Packaging wise I personally prefer the Roller Lash, I really like the pink rubberised cap and the box itself is really pretty for me it just screams Benefit however on first glance I feel like I'm going to prefer They're Real, simply down to the wand itself. Normally I prefer proper bristles as opposed to the rubber style that both these mascaras have but I am definitely more drawn to the larger wand on They're Real.

In order to make it a fair trial, I started with clean lashes, both curled (I am aware that Roller Lash is meant to void the need for curling but I thought it best if both started the same). Applying Roller Lash to one eye, top and bottom lashes and They're Real to the other, again both top and bottom. This is going to be a bit of a first impressions post, recording my thoughts as the day goes on as opposed to a full blown review. I think it's super important to remember that mascara is so subjective as well, different products work so different for everyone and what works for me may not be the same for you.

2pm: Two coats of each applied. They're Real gives me visibly more volume and length to my top and bottom lashes and is noticeably more black in colour. Roller Lash didn't really do a great deal for my bottom lashes, they just look a bit sparse. The wand on They're Real is a little sharp and inflexible compared to Roller Lash which feels a lot more comfortable on the eyes.

4pm: Both holding a curl well, no fall out or smudging. They're Real is slightly clumpier than Roller Lash with a couple of coats (a look I personally prefer).

6pm: Though the They're Real side still looks fine, the curl is definitely holding up slightly better with Roller Lash. I have noticed that the formula does feel slightly sticky though, even 4 hours later it doesn't feel completely dry.

8pm: Honestly? Both still look fine, I still prefer the volume given with They're Real.

10pm: Time to take it off. Honestly both worked fine for me and lasted really nicely. Roller Lash held a nicer curl for longer but with me it's all about the volume, so They're Real just pips it to the post. It was however the trickier of the two to remove.

Final verdict: For me personally, I didn't notice a huge difference between the two. They're Real for me just had the extra volume and colour that I go for with Roller Lash holding a longer curl but other than that, didn't do anything particularly special for me. I think my next experiment will be to layer them together for volume and curl.

Which of these two is your favourite?

  6. Man, I really do love both mascaras, but Roller Lash takes the cake for me. I have really straight lashes and it's one of the few to help me hold a curl.

  7. I've always stuck with Roller Lash because I find it so good for curling and lengthening, but I really need to give They're Real another try :) Love the idea of combining them both too! xx

  8. Out of the two I honestly have to say I prefer Roller Lash as I find They're Real too clumpy and I found bits to crumble off throughout the day - but after reading this I do kinda want to give it another go haha!

  16. They're Real has been one of, if not my favourite mascara for a few years now. I only don't currently use it because I have so many to get through and it's a little expensive (although my boyfriend bought me one for Christmas!). I tried Roller Lash when it came out but it's not for me. It's okay, but not for the price, and I still have to curl my lashes before applying it as I don't find that it curls mine itself x
